Caple A. Spence

Classes for the Oklahoma City area (OKC) are held in Oklahoma City.  Relax and sink with us as you spend time deepening your understanding of balance and relaxation.

The form is taught in a sequential fashion and so we are already through some of the form. Where you begin is not really that important since we review material every class, but it can be unnerving for someone who wants to start from "The beginning". Tai chi is gentle and relaxing while being beneficial for strengthening.  It is a great practice for bodyweight strengthening of the legs and waist. It is gentle on the joints while stretching their range of motion. The process of learning and perfecting the form much less the applications, push hands, sword, and fencing takes years. We tackle it one class at a time, but you can move as quickly as your diligence will allow. It is not a race, but a journey that may not end, if you are so inclined. Understanding of the material is deepened and refined in class over time by reviewing and studying more closely the material, but the art is acquired through self study. You should seek to understand the ideas underlying the movement in order to make meaningful progress. Practicing the concept and visualizations allows for greater focus and concentration. Our slow movements allow for deep meditative relaxation as well. But to be clear, that is not necessary to practice the martial applications specifically in order to benefit from practice of the form.
I recommend you attend a few free classes first then decide if you want to continue. No supplies are really needed, we don't have uniforms. Wear comfortable street clothes and socks or flat bottom shoes.

What is Tai Chi Chuan?

Tai Chi Chuan is an effortless and rhythmical art that stresses slow breathing, balanced and relaxed postures, and absolute calmness of mind.  It requires no special equipment or place to practice, and takes no more than ten minutes a day.  Students will learn how to progress from exercise to sport to self-defense with maximum efficiency.

T'ai-chi is a method of self defense par excellence. Judo, Aikido, and a few other Asian methods stress the yielding principle of T'ai-chi, but none achieve to the same degree its relaxation, suppleness, and subtlety.
